       Islamic Wealth Management Certificate Program

 

This course will teach you how to make wise investment decisions and manage your financial life in accordance with your religious principles. This course will explore the intersection of traditional and modern Islamic finance in its descriptions of acceptable investment products, home ownership, and education, retirement, and estate planning.

The certificate program in Islamic Wealth Management consists of  four courses: one course offered during each of Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer terms of 2010-2011. Each course is at least 10 contact-hours and may include web-based sessions or guest lecturers.

II.Description of the courses:

* IWM01: Faith-Based Entrepreneurship   (by Dr. M. Yaqub Mirza)
This course will deal with how to develop entrepreneurial characteristics and what steps to take to develop your own business and life plans. Faith-based entrepreneurship is the ability to develop a vision of the future, to commit oneself to a mission, to be innovative and creative, and to proceed with humility and self confidence with an abiding consciousness of God's design. These characteristics of entrepreneurship offer a path of success in business ventures as well as in public and private life.

* IWM02: Islamic Finance and Banking   (by Dr. Jamal Barzinji) 
This course will introduce Islamic legal objectives of financial contracts,
forbidden transaction in Islamic commercial law, and characteristics and uses of selected Islamic products such as Murabahah, Ijarah, Salam, and Istisnah contracts. It will also touch on key considerations in developing Islamic products such as Islamic credit cards and promissory currency contracts. Also discussed will be Islamic risk management, key liquidity risks for Islamic banks and their treatment, and the basics of Islamic securities.

* IWM03: Savings and Islamic Investing  (by Dr. Yaqub Mirza)

IWM04: Inheritance and Wills (by Dr. M. Yaqub Mirza and Dr. Jamal Barzinji)
This course will give an overview of the Islamic laws of inheritance applicable to Muslims living in America. Such laws are of significant importance because they place certain restrictions as to whom one can leave one’s estate and the amount that one can leave. However, the Islamic laws of inheritance can be
accommodated and implemented within American system of laws by way of a valid will.       
A will is a necessity not only because it is commanded by Islam, but also because it can prevent local laws being applied to the estate in violation of Islamic law. At the same time, the will should comply with local law, without being contrary to Islamic law, so that it can be executed without any unnecessary legal problems.
