Teaching Essentials For Non-Teachers Certificate Program

The Fairfax Institute (TFI) offers Islamic Weekend School teachers an on-line and on-site professional development certificate in the basic elements of Islamic education.This certificate program seeks to equip weekend school teachers, for example, parents of children and other volunteers - to serve as teachers, teacher assistants or substitute teachers in case of need. Courses in this certificate program do not qualify non-teachers to become professional teachers but train participants in basic teaching skills.
This certificate consists of four courses on selected topics.
Required Courses:
v TE1 Teaching Methods
v TE2 Lesson Planning
v TE3 Classroom Management
v TE4 Evaluation & Assessment
Each course is taught in ten contact hours spread over five sessions, with one course taught per term . Days and times, frequency of class sessions, and scheduling of courses can be adjusted to accommodate local school needs. A minimum of five teachers must sign up for the certificate to be offered.
Description of the courses:
♦ TE1 Teaching Methods:
This course will help develop an understanding of the teaching methods in the Islamic tradition, considering the student’s background, knowledge, environment, and learning goals.
The course will also expound on the different techniques used by teachers which cater to multiple learning styles to help student retain information and strengthen understanding by illustrating a variety of methods used to insure that all students have equal opportunities to learn e.i. “ Questioning, explaining, modeling, collaborating, and demonstrating.”
